Wow, we're so happy to be nominated for GROUP RECORDING OF THE YEAR by the East Coast Music Association. #ECMA2018 is gonna be huge (it's is their 30th anniversary!) and we can't wait to play in Halifax in May. Check out their announcement page for the entire list of nominees - we are among great company :)
In other, very exciting, news: we've got a new drummer. We had very well prepared and executed auditions. It was awesome to see several young, hard-working drummers who are already on the scene here in St. John's try out for the part and I'm happy to say it wasn't easy to pick a winner. We had to go with the one who both played great and was a good fit for the band.
Well, we've all made it and got another year under our collective belts. Being in band is very rewarding, but never easy! The past year we've had some great successes: like playing our first festival in the UK, releasing our second album, and working the eastern canadian showcase circuit. Buuut, our original drummer Andrew McCarthy moved away, and our subsequent-presumed-forever-drummer Ash Chalmers had to back out of the band to be with his family. Understandable, of course, but very frustrating, as you can imagine.
This is a new year, however! We've got a couple of very talented drummers in the running to be "the one", and just got our tickets and air bnb booked for our showcases @ Folk Alliance Inter...
It's been a few weeks since we had our release party for KITCHUSES at the Rockhouse, and we have some pics for you! We were fortunate that New Zealand photographer Gareth White (garethwhite.co.nz) was able to come to our show and take some snaps. Make sure you visit his website! Here they are:
We also had the wiley Lee Tizzard in taking some footage, so expect some video from the release coming soon.
Annnnd last but not least, upcoming shows! Tomorrow we head to beautiful Ottawa for the Canadian Arts Presenting Association's annual conference. We are playing a closed showcase at the legendary Black Sheep in Wakefield Thursday night. It will be our second time there and we cannot wait to share the stage with...
We're so happy to be playing TWO showcases as part of MusicNL's 25th anniversary! Our first is Friday night, Oct 12, at the Jazz and Blues Showcase. We're closing out the night at the FAT Cat at 12:45am (that's after midnight) and are playing a half hour set. Check out the Facebook event for the full details:
Not too long after, Saturday afternoon, we're opening up the export buyers showcase at the St. John's Convention Centre at 2pm. To top it all off we will be joined by our fabulous original drummer, Andrew McCarthy, for both showcases!
Make sure to visit MusicNL.ca for all the conference info! They are doing an amazing job and we wouldn't be where we are without them.
We're going to be releasing our new album, Kitchuses, on Saturday September 30th at Fred's Records at 2pm.
We'll be doing an acoustic set that's open to all ages and is completely free! You'll have a chance to hear some new tunes, buy the album, as well as shirts (which will be available year-round at Fred's now) and limited edition pins designed by Jud Haynes.
We had an excellent time at Noztock, our first time playing in the UK! We met awesome horn bands, helpful industry folk, and played a couple of great sets. Check out some choice pics below and if you'd like to see more pics from our adventures, check out our Instagram.
Now you may notice that Andrew is lacking in our pics. Well, sad to say, our beloved McCarthy is heading to Toronto to further his musical education. Playing with him over these past 4 years has been an incredible journey and we could not have asked for a more inspiring drummer. We will miss you bud!
Tonight (Friday August 18thwe are having a goodbye show for Andrew McCarthy, as well as Adam Martin, who fronts my other group, Hear/Say...
